These birds are intelligent, sensitive, curious animals, but living with them and caring for them properly can be much more challenging than people imagine. If you’re thinking about getting an exotic pet bird, consider the following: Birds, even the ones bred in captivity, are not domesticated animals. Domesticated animals, such as cats and dogs, have been bred for hundreds of years to live in the care of humans and are distinct from their wild ancestors. Birds commonly kept as pets are no different than their wild relatives; they are the native species of other countries. Many “negative” behaviors of birds in captivity are expressions of natural instincts. You may be surprised to learn that more than 350 species of parrots have been identified, and each species has distinct behaviors and particular needs in terms of care. So, before you adopt a parrot, you’ll need to educate yourself about the characteristics and needs of the species you choose. Parrots have been compared to human toddlers in terms of their emotional, intellectual and social lives, which means they need a lot of daily interaction with people and/or other birds. Toys and other enrichment methods are essential to keep their minds busy and healthy. If these needs aren’t met, they can easily develop behavior problems, such as feather plucking. All parrots have long life spans. Depending on the species, they may live 30 to 70 years, and some species live longer than that. Caring for a bird is often a lifelong responsibility. Parrots are noisy. Vocalizing via squawking and chirping is a parrot’s way of communicating. Also, you should know that not all parrots are talking birds. While all parrots are vocal, not all of them learn to talk or choose to talk.

Adoption fees are what keep this rescue in operation. Rescue is expensive. Very expensive. Rescues rarely ever make a profit but rather recirculate excess funds into caring for current and future birds in need. These fees WILL vary depending on each individual bird. The cost of adoption is about one quarter of the cost of buying the same bird from a pet store. Our birds all come with full Vet checks, cages, perches, & toys. The cost does not change if you decide not to take the cage. Adoption fees have many variables. The birds age, health, temperament, socialization, vocabulary, and other factors. *Bonded pairs and hospice birds have an adjusted adoption fee **Bartering and negotiations aren't acceptable nor tolerated.

Your first visit with the birds is understandably a very exciting time. There are some things to consider before visiting. Due to the various sizes of birds we prefer children be over the age of 12. We will take each scenario on a case by case basis. If you plan on bringing children with you please let us know in advance. It is for the bird's safety as well as your child's. Please do not bring other pets with you! We have dogs on site and it creates a huge issue for us when we have visitors show up with their pets. Please be prompt for your visit or let us know if you are running late! We do have other responsibilities and it can throw the day off when we have someone no show or show up late. When you come we want you to relax and make yourself at home and spend as much time as you would like with the birds. We will typically leave you on your own so the bird bonds with you and we aren't interfering with that bond. So please, if you need particular accommodations please let us know in advance.

There are several good reasons to adopt a bird rather than buy one. First, it's the right thing to do because commercial breeding operations are flooding the market with exotic pet birds, many of whom end up in rescue groups when consumers realize the complexities of caring for these animals. If you buy a parrot from either a pet shop or a breeder, it simply makes the problem worse. By adopting rather than buying a parrot, you help reduce the demand that drives the commercial breeding of pet birds. Also, if you purchase a parrot, you probably won’t have a great deal of support if you have questions about your bird’s behavior or care further down the line. By contrast, reputable parrot rescue groups do provide that support, offering advice and resources as you and your new bird adjust to life together.

We recommend adopting a smaller bird. We will not adopt out birds such as macaws, greys, conures and most species of cockatoo to people living in apartments or duplexes on account of their VOLUME! They can become a noise violations quickly.

We want the birds we place to have the best possible shot of being with you in your home and in your life, for the rest of theirs. We try not to have hard and fast rules. But there are a few: 1) Smoking in your home is an immediate denial for adoption. It is devastating to your birds health. This includes weed and vaping. 2) We have a return contract. If you adopt from here, you will not be able to sell, giveaway or otherwise lose possession of the animal, and the animal must be returned to the rescue. We do not provide refunds for adoption fees. 3) The adoption contract includes a 60 day mandatory acclimation period. If the bird doesn’t acclimate well, you can transfer your adoption fee to a different bird one time within that 60 day period with the return of the bird in your care. 4) Macaws and apartments do not jive. Any bird who is known to vocalize loudly cannot be adopted into an apartment. 5) We do a home check for all potential adopters. 6) All adopters will need to come and do a meet and greet with the birds multiple times before adoption.

If you adopt you will sign a 'no breeding contract'. It requires your birds not to be breed and have babies.

We do not ship any birds, as this is highly stressful for the bird and costly. In addition, part of the adoption process is a home inspection, so it is necessary that you live within a reasonable driving distance. Further, it is necessary that you meet the bird prior to our decision to adopt to you. This way we know the bird will like you and you will like the bird. There are no exceptions to this policy.
